Bee -ing Green - Glenlo Apiary
In 2023 we installed an Apiary on the Estate consisting of 7 Bee Hives. The location of our Apiary is located in a sheltered area towards Lough Corrib on the Estate.
Bees act as a polinator for the variety of flora and wild flowers accross our 138 acres.
Each hive when active has 30,000 native Irish Black Honey Bees. Throughout the season (typically March through to October) the bees will produce 4 distinctive types of honey, in Spring they produce the Spring Dandeline Honey, this is light in colour and whilst flavoursome it is also know for its anti inflamatory properties. The next honey our bees will produce is known as the Bramble Honey which is richer in colour and texture to the Spring Dandeline. As the season evolves the Bees are attracted to wild Ivy and hence this honey they produce is known as Ivy Honey and is equal if not supperior to the properties found in the Manuka Honey from New Zealand. In the Autumn our bees are attracted to the wild heathers and they produce a thick visucus honey which has to be pressed know as Heather Honey.
Our Hives our maintained by our own Bee Keepers, who looks after the hives and the honey combs. Honey from our Estate is also used by our Chefs in some of our receipes and jars of our honey are aslo available for our hotel guests to enjoy.
Recycling
The hotel has a waste diversion rate of 80% from landfill. Each guest bedroom has recycling cards and bins, that encourage and show guests how to recycle in their bedrooms.
All plastic bottles used for hair and body products are recyclable and are refilled by our housekeeping department.
Environmentally-friendly cards in our bedrooms give guests the option to re-use towels and bed linen by following simple steps.
The hotel uses bio-degradable take away cups & straws which can be composted, while the lid can be recycled.
Used kitchen oil is sent to a biodiesel plant for recycling and all packaging used to transport food produce is recycled by our suppliers and reused.
